The SIM900 GSM GPRS Dev’ Board is a modular Arduino Shield that attaches directly onto existing Arduino Mega projects, providing internet access and WiFi communication capabilities. By utilizing the SIM900 chip, it is capable of delivering 850/900/1800/1900MHz GSM/GPRS performance for voice, SMS, Data and Fax communications – all within a compact form factor and with low power consumption.
This shield genuinely opens up an endless amount of possibilities, as it enables your projects to communicate with almost any device around the world, as well as with each other, despite being located in random or remote locations. And as such, you can make your home automation system activate when your car gets close to the house, you can make your fridge order more vegetables when they’re running out, or you can even build devices to track stolen vehicles or property in case of theft.
The SIM900 GSM GPRS Shield is typically controlled via GSM 07.07, 07.05 and SIMCOM enhanced AT commands, which in turn operate the powerful AMR926EJ-S core-based SIM900 chip. This chip, while being considered as a very cost-effective solution compared to similar chips, offers a wide range of features, although the most important feature is the small form factor. Many other chips can perform to the same efficiency and effect as the SIM900, but very few have a form factor small enough to cater to compact Arduino Board projects – which is why this Shield has recently taken the lead in popularity amongst Makers online.

Typical Applications for the SIM900 GSM GPRS Dev Shield:
By providing your project with Wi-Fi and internet capabilities, you open up a door to an endless amount of possibilities. Not only can you now connect up all of your projects to work together in unison, but you can also have your projects work with other projects around the world. With that being said, the most common applications for the SIM900 GSM GPRS Dev Board Arduino Shield include:
- Connecting projects together wirelessly so, for example, your 3D scanner in one office can send files directly to your 3D printers in another office – automating the process and removing the need for manual work in between.
- Creating a home automation system that tracks devices within your home and activates parts of the house according to the positions of residents – and warns when new devices come within the vicinity.
- Building your own tracking devices for your car or your office’s fleet of vehicles – for better management of drivers and greater security against hijackings or vehicle theft.
As you can see, a majority of the applications for the SIM900 GSM GPRS Shield offer genuine value in terms of convenience, safety and simple management, although they can be used simply for fun as well, and are ideal for making devices like GPS Caches or for advanced treasure hunts. So, whether you are eager to build a home automation system, connect your machines and projects via WiFi, or simply want to experiment with the possibilities of GPRS capabilities, the SIM900 Shield is a reliable and affordable investment.
